BANYAN ANNOUNCES VINES VERSION 5.0
New Generation of VINES Supports Macintosh Client Workstations
And Features Powerful Architectural Innovations
NETWORLD DALLAS, October 15, 1991 -- Banyan Systems of Westboro,
Mass., today announced and demonstrated VINESR Version 5.0, which
marks a new generation of the VINES network operating system. The
innovations in this release make enterprise-wide networks easier
to use and manage than ever before, even when different computer
client types -- including AppleR MacintoshR -- are integrated into
the network.
In the new Version 5.0, VINES has been rearchitected to include:
* Transparent support for heterogeneous client types
including Macintosh, DOS, OS/2R, and WindowsTM,
* AppleTalkTM tunneling across the enterprise network,
* New and enhanced file and print services,
* Expanded server memory support, and
* Numerous enhancements to base VINES services.
"Banyan developed VINES Version 5.0 to give all VINES users - -
regardless of their workstations and operating systems - -
convenient access to the industry's most powerful and most
consistent set of network services," said James D. D'Arezzo, Banyan
Vice President, Marketing. "At the same time, Version 5.0 extends
Banyan's traditional lead in providing heterogeneous computing
environments that are as easy to manage as they are to use."

Most noteworthy among the advancements of VINES Version 5.0 is the
breadth of client support which has been broadened to encompass
Macintosh workstations within the enterprise-wide VINES
environment. As a result, users can now fully integrate MacR
workstations with other VINES users running DOS, OS/2 and Windows.
Apple Computer, Inc. Applauds
Macintosh Integration in VINES Version 5.0
"Banyan has made it easy for Macintosh users to coexist and share
resources with users of other computers and operating systems
within a single VINES network," said Michael Spindler, president
and chief operating officer of Apple Computer, Inc. "Banyan's
product is another milestone in the acceptance of AppleTalk as an
industry standard by leading networking vendors."
Comprehensive Macintosh Client Support
an Option for VINES Version 5.0
Banyan has announced two new software options for VINES Version 5.0
to support the Macintosh. The high level of Macintosh integration
evident in these options reflects Banyan's commitment to conform
with standards such as the AppleTalk network protocols, which
Banyan is licensing from Apple Computer, Inc. Use of these
protocols assures users that communications to and from Macintosh
computers will be transparent and comply with Apple standards.
VINES Option for Macintosh
Installed on any server running VINES Version 5.0, VINES Option for
Macintosh connects an unlimited number of Macintosh clients to the
mixed platform environment of a VINES network. With this option,
the powerful VINES network services already available to DOS,
Windows, and OS/2-based VINES users are now also readily available
to Macintosh-based VINES users.
VINES Option for Macintosh is unique in that it permits AppleTalk
tunneling through VINES. This capability makes it possible to
extend the power of VINES resources to Macintosh users and enables
disjointed AppleTalk networks to be connected with each other
though the VINES network. Any Mac on a VINES network can access
local and wide area network resources absolutely anywhere on that
network across the enterprise.
Access to VINES network services (including directory, security,
management, messaging, file and print) is easy and transparent with
VINES Option for Macintosh. Mac users need no knowledge of network
topology beyond familiar Macintosh login conventions in order to
use the network's resources. To access file and print services,
they use the Macintosh "Chooser". Other services run transparently
in the background; users need not even invoke them to use them.

Moreover, all VINES network users share another unique degree of
parity. Regardless of their computing platform, VINES allows all
users to run their preferred user interface on the same network at
the same time.
VINES Mail for Macintosh
Banyan has also broadened its support for Macintosh users with
VINES Mail for Macintosh. This new option seamlessly integrates
Macintosh computers into the enterprise-wide electronic mail
network, empowering Mac users to create, address, read, send and
manage e-mail along with all other VINES Network Mail users.
As with VINES Option for Macintosh, VINES Mail for Macintosh is
tied directly to VINES directory, security, timing, messaging, and
communications services. This direct linkage assures seamless,
transparent interoperability among different computing platforms.
Each user on the VINES network has a single mailbox which can be
accessed from any client machine anywhere on the network. Users
need not have multiple mailboxes for different client types.
Consequently, VINES network administrators see a single view of
each mail user (whether the user runs a Mac, DOS, OS/2 or
Windows-based workstation) and can administer all mail
users quickly, easily, and uniformly.
VINES Version 5.0 Architectural Changes
Add Function, Versatility, and Control
In addition to the expanded heterogeneous client support, Banyan
has made the following architectural improvements to VINES Version
5.0:
* A new and enhanced file system, which enables users to
create and manage file services that support different
workstation types: DOS, OS/2, Windows, and Macintosh.
* A new and comprehensive print service, which enhances the
administration, usage, and general functionality of
network print services, resulting in greater control over
print jobs, better information on job status, and an
expanded ability to increase the number of printers per
server in accordance with user demand.
* An assortment of enhancements to other VINES services,
including messaging, network management, and time
services, which strengthen the customer's ability to
support, integrate, manage, and run a full heterogeneous
client environment over geographically dispersed networks.
